THANK YOU for considering me to paint a portrait of the very special animal in your life. Watching the individual personality of your best friend emerge on paper, from the first watercolor washes to the final sparkle in the eyes, is one my greatest pleasures.
PHOTOGRAPHS: I create Best Friend Watercolor Portraits from your good quality photographs. The better and clearer the picture, the better the portrait. I like to get several photos of the subject, but ask that you choose and mark one as the pose for the painting. I will let you know if it will make a good portrait. I also need one accurate representation of your animal’s coloring, and get one close up of the eyes without a flash. The rest of the photos help me get a feeling for your pet’s size and personality.
TIPS:
- Take photos outdoors in early morning or afternoon sunlight. The light and shadow help give the subject form.
- Fill the frame with the subject.
- Try to shoot at your pet’s eye level as much as possible.
- Avoid using a flash indoors if possible; it washes out detail.

Your pet’s name, breed, age and color
When I receive the pictures I will contact you to set up an email or phone conversation to discuss my ideas for the portrait and get your thoughts, so we can agree on an approach to the painting. I also enjoy hearing about how and why your pet is special to you.
SIZES AND PRICING: Popular sizes are 9 x 12, 12 x 16 and 18 x 24. Custom sizes are also available. Prices start from $400 to $700, depending on portrait size, number of figures, and background details. Sales tax and shipping additional.
APPROVAL: When the portrait is completed, I will email a digital proof to you for approval or suggested changes. I will make changes as possible and then email you another proof. I want you to be completely satisfied with your Best Friend Watercolor Portrait.
DELIVERY TIME: Please allow 8-10 weeks for delivery of your portrait. If you need delivery in a shorter time frame or for a special occasion, please let me know and I will make every effort to accommodate you.
PAYMENT AND SHIPPING: I request a $100 deposit paid by personal check or money order before I begin your portrait. The balance is due after acceptance of the final proof. I will contact you with the amount of the final payment. When I have received it, I will ship the portrait to you protectively wrapped and packaged. If you live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, personal delivery can be arranged.
